Don’t Get Caught Dead: Check Your Car Battery

As a car owner you know how important your car battery is and you have heard that extreme temperatures can shorten the lifespan of the battery, but why is this? Below are some reasons extreme weather can cause your car battery to fail:

  • Hot Weather- When the temperature starts getting hotter it can shorten the life of your car battery by causing battery fluid to evaporate, extreme heat can cause parts of the battery to corrode, and extreme heat can cause parts of the charging system to malfunction allowing them to overcharge the battery and therefore shorten the life of the battery.
  • Cold Weather- When the temperature starts getting colder it can shorten the life of your car battery by causing engine oil to become thicker causing the battery to have to work harder to get the engine running, in winter drivers use more systems like heater, headlights, windshield wipers, and defroster significantly increasing the load the car battery needs to operate, and when you drive your car it automatically recharges the battery but cold temperatures cause the charge rate to slow and you will have to drive farther to properly recharge the battery.

At Lewis Chrysler Dodge Jeep we know that drivers cannot control the temperature outside so if you have any questions or concerns regarding your car battery come visit our service center in Fayetteville and speak with one of our experts.
