In that vein, it’s coming up on the 2021 holiday season in Fayetteville, which means a lot of NWA folks are gearing up to go visit family and friends in the upcoming months.  Before you start out on your trip, you want to make sure your vehicle is in its best condition, so that you stay on the road without any unexpected hiccups along the way.  We put together a list of the top things that you, or your Service Department at Lewis Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM in Fayetteville can check before you get going.

Check The Battery

You’ll want to make sure your car’s battery is properly tightened, with a corrosion-free connection.  Any corrosion will need to be cleaned with a wire brush after the battery is disconnected.  Since batteries contain acid that is corrosive and harmful, if you’re not familiar with how to properly clean a car battery, it’s easy and safe to leave it to a professional, like our Mopar and factory-trained technicians.  It’s a general rule of thumb to check your battery every year after it’s more than two years old.

Inspect Belts and Hoses

Some of the most critical parts for keeping your car’s electrical, power steering, and cooling systems all running properly are the engine’s belts and hoses.  A professional inspection can let you know if any are frayed and/or cracked.  Belts should also not have a large amount of slack to them, so you’ll want to verify that they’re tightly installed.  Any leaks or drips in your hoses should also be addressed immediately.

Top Off Fluids and Replace Filters

A car has a bunch of different fluids necessary to keep it functioning properly, including engine oil, power steering and transmission fluids, and windshield washing fluid.  If any are low, they’ll need to be topped off before your trip.  You should also have the coolant level in your engine checked to make sure it’s filled to the level recommended by your manufacturer.  If you’re getting close to your next oil change, this is also a good time to just get that done before the trip.  Last up, be sure the engine’s air filter is changed out if it’s dirty or clogged with debris, since that drastically affects your car’s performance.

Check Your Lights, Tires, and Brakes

Make sure your lights, interior and exterior, are all working properly, so you don’t have to worry about finding and replacing any burned out bulbs during your trip.  Having clear visibility is essential for a safe trip.  In that same vein, it may be time to check your windshield wipers.  They’re recommended to be changed every six months, but especially if they’re not removing water from your windshield or leaving streaks that can impede your view.

Any squealing noises from your brakes are an indicator that you’ve got worn brake pads, so if they’re making that or any other odd noises, make sure to have them professionally inspected.  You can also have your brake fluid checked at this time, as well as making sure your tires are properly inflated.  Underinflated tires affect more than just safety, they also affect your car’s fuel economy.  When you’re driving long distances, we’re sure you’ll want to keep your trips to the gas pumps to a minimum whenever possible!  Along with tire pressure, make sure your tires still have enough tread left to safely grip the road.  Our technicians at Lewis Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM's Service Department can help with an inspection and recommend any actions needed, if any.
